An international conference dedicated to supporting people diagnosed with cancer – whether they are currently in treatment, living with the disease or have already overcome it – as well as their families, was held on May 29 at CITY College, the European campus of the University of York in Thessaloniki, as part of the COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) campaign.

This important scientific initiative, supported by the European Union, gathered experts, researchers and innovators from different countries with a common goal – to improve the quality of life of people living with cancer, during and after the disease, as well as to support their families by the application of modern and sustainable solutions.

The conference enabled the exchange of new knowledge and research achievements, with a focus on digital innovations in healthcare. Participants showcased a range of technology solutions, including wearable devices, artificial intelligence, mobile applications, electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePROs), virtual clinics, and remote health monitoring systems.

MD Nikola Jovanović, medical expert in Heliant, presented a digital platform to support doctors in the treatment of multiple myeloma. Through the HERMES communication service, a direct exchange of medical documentation between doctors in general hospitals in Užice and Valjevo, and haematology specialists of the Clinical Centre of Serbia had been enabled.

Based on the submitted data on the patient, the haematology specialist prepares an expert report and forwards it to the competent doctor, which ensures a faster, coordinated and better diagnostic and therapeutic decision. This model of electronic consultations contributes to improving the quality of treatment, reducing the number of unnecessary referrals and strengthening cooperation among healthcare professionals.

This conference showed once again how cooperation, interdisciplinary approach and innovation were key to a more humane and efficient treatment of oncology patients in Europe and the world.
