The company “Heliant” and the Faculty of Mathematics have been cooperating for many years. Every year, a new generation of students has the opportunity to learn about the company’s work on practical examples, and to find out about internships and professional training through innovative projects in the field of medical informatics.
In April 2022, the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Belgrade, in cooperation with “Heliant”, organized an online course for its students, within the subject “Database Programming”. Last week, as a continuation of that course, Filip Maljković, head of the development team at “Heliant”, invited by MD Ivana Tanasijević, Assistant Professor at the Department of Computing and Informatics, presented the application of databases in practice to the new generation of third-year students.
Being a leading provider of healthcare information systems on the domestic market, “Heliant” constantly faces challenges related to databases. With that in mind, Maljković presented basic and more advanced concepts in working with databases. Various techniques and methodologies were covered, especially in combination with Java, followed by examples of data handling in practice.
Students learn about this topic theoretically at the university, and these practical examples help them see the bigger picture. By combining theory and practice, the students complete their knowledge that they will apply in their future professional engagement.
After the two-hour lecture, students had the opportunity to ask questions. They were most interested in data protection and security, since it was about sensitive data, as well as data analytics. They were also inquisitive about how the Heliant health information system was created. To that question, Maljković pointed out that with the help of doctors’ experience in practice and, in recent years, expert medical associates in our research and development team, we managed to develop an information system that was now the leader in the number of users in the healthcare sector of Serbia and the region.
In addition to a useful lecture that complemented their regular course at the university, the students wanted to hear more about the company itself. They were presented with software solutions that we had been developing for 23 years, as well as the structure of the team that had been developing it. They were familiarized with the technologies we used and healthcare facilities we cooperated with. They also listened enthusiastically about their colleagues who, after graduating from MATF, were employed at “Heliant”, where they gained rich experience and years of service. It was a confirmation for them that they always had the possibility of employment with us after completing their studies.
