A guest lecture by Filip Maljković, Head of Development at Heliant, was held today at the Faculty of Mathematics in Belgrade. The lecture was intended for second-year undergraduate students and was organized at the invitation of PhD Mirjana Maljković Ružičić, Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Informatics.
The topic of the lecture was relational databases, with expanded content based on the presentation previously delivered to students two years ago. This lecture represented a continuation of the ongoing collaboration between Heliant and the Faculty of Mathematics, providing students with direct insight into the practical application of theoretical knowledge in the field of database systems.
During the lecture, in addition to the fundamental concepts of relational databases, students were introduced to more advanced topics relevant to working in the IT industry, including:
- an overview of key concepts in working with enterprise-level database systems
- large-scale data migrations
- challenges of working with large databases, including scalability, consistency, and efficient data management
Students were presented with practical examples from Heliant work, including object-relational mapping in object-oriented programming languages, the use of ORM tools such as JPA and Hibernate, as well as demonstrations of advanced SQL queries and query optimization in real-world systems.
Filip Maljković emphasized that the goal of the lecture was to bring students closer to the complex processes involved in managing large-scale databases in an industrial environment and to demonstrate how theoretical knowledge is applied in healthcare-related projects.
This guest lecture further enriched the course curriculum and helped students better understand how the database knowledge they acquire during their studies is applied in a professional setting.
